Electrician running new cables during a house rewire in Clifton

House Rewire Bristol

Wiring does not last forever. Cable insulation becomes brittle with age, older installations have far fewer sockets than a modern household needs, and many lack the RCD protection that is now standard on every new circuit.

Avonside Electrical carries out full and partial rewires on houses and flats of every age. We plan the work carefully with you, keep disruption to a minimum and finish with a new consumer unit, properly protected circuits and an Electrical Installation Certificate for the whole property.

Rewires planned room by room to keep disruption down

Signs Your Home Needs Rewiring

Look out for black rubber, lead or fabric-covered cables, a fuse box with rewireable fuses, sockets mounted on skirting boards, or old round-pin sockets still in use. Lights that flicker, switches or sockets that feel warm, scorch marks and a burning smell are warning signs that need attention straight away.

If you are not sure, an EICR will tell you whether the wiring can be repaired or needs replacing.

Rewiring Services

Every rewire is different, and the right approach depends on the age of the building, how you use it and what else is happening to it. A house being renovated top to bottom can be rewired in one go while the floors are up, while a lived-in home may be better rewired floor by floor.

We survey the property first, talk through where you want sockets, lighting and data points, and give you a fixed written quote before any work is booked.

Living at Home During a Rewire

Most people stay in their homes while they are rewired. We work one area at a time, keep at least some power and lighting on each evening where we can, and clean up at the end of every day.

We cover floors and furniture, tell you in advance which rooms we need and when, and keep you updated as the job progresses. In period homes we lift boards carefully and use existing voids wherever possible, so making good afterwards is kept to a minimum.

How a Rewire Works

A rewire is carried out in two stages. First fix is when we lift floorboards, chase walls and run all the new cables and back boxes, before any plastering or decorating. Second fix comes once the walls are made good, when we fit sockets, switches, lights and the new consumer unit, with RCD protection on every circuit and spare capacity for an EV charger, heat pump or solar panels.

Finally we test every circuit, complete the certificate and show you around the new installation, so you know where everything is and what each circuit does. A typical three-bedroom house takes around five to ten working days, depending on size and access.

Get a Rewiring Quote

Contact Avonside Electrical to arrange a rewiring survey and a fixed written quote. Tell us the type and size of the property, roughly how old the wiring is, whether you will be living there during the work, and whether any other building work is planned. If an EICR has already been done, send it over, as it helps us price accurately.

A rewire is notifiable work under the Building Regulations, so we register it with building control and issue an Electrical Installation Certificate for the whole property, which you will need when you come to sell. We rewire homes across Bristol, Clifton, Redland and the surrounding neighbourhoods.
